Kira Makoto
"I will not stray again from the path that is my own. While I am thankful for the time we spent together, I WILL exterminate this world of its malice!" - Kira to Aaron, Reaper Arc
|
Kira Makoto is a member of Amandine City's special defense force, a major antagonist in the series (later), and a supporting protagonists. He is a 15 year old male with purple eyes and long teal hair. He wears a striped red and blue shirt with a light white jacket over top. He is often seen with a red scarf, and navy blue pants. Kira is of a friendly disposition and attempts to please everyone, however he is also quite serious on many matters. Having grown up with the very laid back Aaron Lotus, Kira often takes it upon himself to keep the members of the Sephirot focused and in line. This seriousness is related to an underlying self-confidence problem. Kira is insecure because for most of the series, he is unable to summon fully manifest his soul weapon, and therefore has almost no fighting prowess. Eventually, this dissatisfaction will lead him to be tempted by the Reapers who transform him back into his original form as the King of the Reapers. After his transformation, he maintains the philosophy that power is the only thing that matters in the world. After he is defeated, he returns to the Sephirot and feels incredibly guilty about his actions, but over time, Aaron helps him to move on.
Though he himself is not aware until partway through the series, Kira Makoto is the King of the Reapers and the traitor to the Sephirot, of which is the first member representing the dimension Kether. He is the only current Reaper who was not artificially created by the gods, and is actually the child of the deity Leonid and a human woman. While he was still very young, Kira was kidnapped by the god of mischief, Rynadon, and had his soul's energy suppressed, turning him into a human. Rynadon left him on Earth without his memories, where Aaron found him. Kira was unable to summon his soul weapon prior to rejoining the Reapers because of this curse, and thus no one could tell he was a demigod. Kira was discovered by Maple Makoto, his fiancée from when he was a demigod, during the events of the Demon Arc while he was trying to summon his soul weapon in the forest outside of Amandine City. Having gone through countless horrors in her quest to locate her husband-to-be, only to find out that he has been stripped of his memories and powers, Maple was heartbroken and resolved to return him to his original state. She follows him around in secret and only makes herself known when Kira is completely alone, using her unique aura as a means to force the resurgence of his suppressed memories. Kira, terribly confused and distraught over the situation, finds himself saying things like, "Let me stay human for just a little bit longer!". Kira has no idea what this means himself and is further tormented by Maple's forceful attempts to reawaken his memories throughout the events beginning with the Demon Arc and ending with those of the Alvon War Arc.

Eventually, during the Alvon War Arc, Kira is forced to recognize that he is something more than human when he and is targeted by Alias with the help of Maple while Aaron and the other members of the Sephirot are fighting in Alvon. The two use his desire for power and his fragile mental state to manipulate him into stepping through a dimensional rift that served as a one way portal to Binah where the rest of the Reapers were waiting in expectation of the return of their leader. Shortly afterwords, he is transformed back into his form as the Reaper of Desire, which caused his soul weapon, Sephirot, to evolve into the Anathemorgue Class. As a Reaper, Kira could use his Anathemorgue power to bring out his full power at the cost of a physical part of his body, but after being transformed back into a human, this power changed to give him the ability to undergo a quantum transformation into his Reaper form (with his full power enabled). Sephirot takes the form of a large scythe and has the power to manipulate divine energy. While all weapons can manipulate their element to a degree, Sephirot is capable of gaining full control over the highly destructive, and incredibly rare divine energy, this power is enhanced many times over when Kira brings out his full power as a reaper. Being Leonid's son, Kira was chosen to be the King of the Reapers and thus has full authority over the other members, and must absorb the malice from the curses of hatred, lust, and greed in addition to desire with a specialized vessel. Maple was given a second chance at life, after being killed by Doctór, as an envoy for the Reapers. She aids Kira with emotional support - helping him to overcome the guilt of betraying his human friends as well as helping him to adjust back into his role as the King of the Reapers, military action- aiding him in battle whenever she deems the situation to be necessary and protecting him while he is vulnerable (in his human state prior to his transformation), and by performing various miscellaneous tasks at his command (as do the Reapers themselves).
Since Sephirot is an Anathemorgue class weapon, it demands and bodily sacrifice to use it's primary ability. The more valuable and large the part he sacrifices, the more power Kira can draw out and the longer he can maintain his Reaper Form. Kira usually offers anything from one to three (in extreme cases) pints of blood. This payment is not made until after his transformation expires, but when this does happen, he almost always falls unconscious as a result. The fact that he becomes vulnerable after reverting back into his human form comprises Kira's greatest weakness because it forces him to defeat his opponent before his transformation times out. The cost and risk of this technique makes him very hesitant with it.
Due to the gap in his memories, Kira's past comprises of the knowledge that one day, he found himself wandering the Lotus estate before collapsing from severe injuries. Aaron Lotus found him and brought him to the manor wear he was treated for his injuries. They were curious about how someone so young could have made it onto the heavily guarded grounds of their estate and what had injured him. He admitted to having no memory and no place to go. After some deliberation, the family agreed to allow him to work as a servant, and Kira agreed. Over time, Kira became very close to Aaron and the head of the family grew very attached to him. Eventually, Kira was treated more so as an adopted son than a servant. Kira decided to go with Aaron when he decided to leave the estate because not only were they as close as brothers, but also he was concerned with how his friend would fair on his own.
In addition to his close relationship with his brother, Aaron, Kira is also quite close to some of the other members of the Sephirot. Kira respects Erza Cross for her strength and composure. He can find the illogical actions of Aaron and Kai to be tiresome at times and sees Erza as a break from the insanity. He was very suspicious of Ryu Naraka following the Rise of the Rapture Swordsman Arc, and was conflicted over the idea of letting his old friend out of his cell but decided to rely on the good judgement of Erza and give him a chance. Over time, Kira began to look at Ryu as a source of inspiration because he was able to transform himself from someone who could hardly walk to the strongest man alive. |

While Kira cherishes his friends in the Sephirot more than anything else in his life, they are also the source of his growing inner turmoil. The curse laid upon him prevents Kira from controlling and drawing out the already highly volatile divine energy which resides within him. This prevents him from even manifesting his soul weapon and Kira believes that the reason for this is because of his own weakness. He is forced to watch on the sideline as his friends reach unprecedented levels of power and strength as he remains stagnant in his ability to grow. He feels as though he is being left behind by those around him and that he is absolutely useless to them now that they are in their own inhuman league. This stress causes his mental fortitude to waiver and become susceptible to Alias' hypnosis; leading him through the dimensional rift.

As a Reaper, Kira changes in both personality and appearance. Unlike his kind-hearted human persona, as the King, Kira is extremely serious and cold in disposition. His philosophy that power is to be valued over all else leads him to act in ways that put his own objectives (in this case the annihilation of human life to eliminate sin) before the well being of his allies and former friends. He is by no means evil as he still recognizes the value and joy he experienced in his time as a human alongside Aaron, but feels that it is necessary for him to throw those feelings aside for the sake of celestial hierarchy as a whole. He expresses his status as the Reaper of Desire through his want for power and the ability to fight alongside his friends despite his inability to even summon a weapon.
In terms of the changes in Kira's physical appearance, his hair becomes slightly longer and of a slightly darker shade of teal. The color pallet of his clothes become centered around the color black rather than red and white. Also, two small, crimson wing-like structures form on his back, with a red gem in the center of each shoulder blade base. Lastly, a set of symmetrical black markings appear under each of his eyes.
Perhaps the most complicated relationship that plays a role in Kira's life is the one he holds with his fiancée, Maple Makoto. Prior to losing his memories, the two demigods were absolutely inseparable and cared more for each other than anything else in the entire dimension of Kether, where they were born. Despite both being incredibly young (Maple has about thirty years on Kira which is almost nothing for a demi-god), the two had genuine feelings of love for each other and were happily engaged. Unfortunately, Kira vanished one day after being kidnapped by Rynadon and turned back into a human with his memories erased. Maple searched all over the various dimensions of their universe in search of him and was aided by the Reapers, who served under him, for a short while. While she was on Earth, however, she was captured by Doctór and transformed into what he refers to as XDEUS-4 after heavy experimentation, but was deemed a failure and disposed of at a later date. The god's granted her a second chance at life as an envoy, a demi-god entity that serves as a supporter/underling to the Reapers, and she dedicated her life to serving her missing husband, the King of the Reapers. It was not until the Demon Arc that Maple finally discovers her fiancé, only to realize that he has lost all of his memories, believes himself to be a human, and is currently powerless. Determined to save her love, she continuously appears before him making attempts to reawaken his memories both vocally and by matching her aura waves to those of Kira's while he was a Reaper. Kira is terribly frightened by all of this and begins to hate her as he believes she is nothing but a demon trying to drive him insane. The gradual resurfacing of his memories is not pleasant and causes Kira a lot of grief in the process, which causes emotional pain for Maple as well. Eventually, Maple's efforts pay off and she manages to lead Kira back to Binah and return his memories. After this happens, Kira remembers the feelings he had for Maple and begins to try and make up for the pain he caused her by doing everything he can to protect her. Maple on the other hand, does everything she can to help Kira overcome the guilt he feels for betraying his comrades and giving up his life as a human.
