Soul Weapons
Soul weapons are manifestations of one's soul that have been focused through the semi-conscious application of an individual's aura in order to give it shape. All humans and gods are born with one of these tools and they can call upon them at will. Soul weapons are not always "weapons", they are often tools, instruments or even simple utensils. They possess many abilities that can vary between individuals, and it is a known fact that there are no two weapons that are exactly alike. Under most circumstances, soul weapons are indestructible and will remain with its wielder for their entire life, and sometimes will retain their physical for a short while postmortem. Using ones soul weapon drains the users energy at a very slow rate; this is based upon the fact that exhausted individuals are unable to manifest their weapons. Also, some weapons have an affinity for one of ten elemental powers that include: divine, wind, electricity, light, darkness, fire, water, pure/raw, bio, and matter. Weapons that have an affinity for one of these elements can usually manipulate, summon, or become the element by trading out the energy of its wielder. Nearly all weapons that possess this characteristic bear an Elemental Purity Level. This is a percentage that measures the quantity of natural energy that is transformed from the within hosts soul into the elemental power produced by the weapon. Natural energy is the aura of the universe itself and is, in a sense, the very essence of nature. By having a larger percentage of your elemental power come from the natural energy that resides within the souls of all living things, rather than your own aura, you can draw out a significantly greater amount of power from your affinity. Meaning, that someone who has a purity level of 25% can draw out more power from the same expenditure of energy than someone who has a purity level of 15%. On average, purity levels tend to be very low and it is quite rare for anyone to have a measurement above 45%.
Here is a layout of the distribution of purity levels:
There are individuals with indeterminable purity levels. There are two possible reasons for this: the first is that they have a variable purity level that changes directly with some aspect of the master - if this is the case, nothing will happen during Water Divination, the second is that the purity level is indeterminable because the water reacted in a never before seen way. Erza Cross and Kai Discus are examples of the prior, while Aaron Lotus is the only known example of the latter.
At some point in most individuals lives, a soul weapon will undergo transformation into one of the twelve soul weapon classes. This transformation is permanent and cannot be reversed, even if there is a drastic change in the persona of the wielder. Each of the twelve classes has unique characteristics and specific personality and karma requirements which all those who evolve into the class must meet. The twelve classes are often displayed in a circle that is arranged with the six positive transformations towards the top (and one in the middle to the left), and the six negative transformation at the bottom (and one in the middle right). The classes that are farthest to the top/bottom depending on which set of six you are in are the rarest while those in the middle are the most common. It is a common misconception that those in the rarer classes are inherently stronger than those in the common ones, but this is by no means true. In addition to being split up into the two sets of good and bad karma, it is also broken down into the five core familia in addition to the two Unique Classes. Each familia consists of two classes directly opposite each other which possess very similar abilities but are based off of opposing characteristics. Here are some of the links to the pages on each familia (in order of rarest to the most common):
