Soul Energy Volume
Soul Energy Volume (commonly abbreviated as "SEV") is a numerical measure for the size of an individual's aura output. In most cases, the greater the size of an individuals aura, the greater the capacity they have as a fighter, and thus SEV is currently the most accepted method by which society determines strength. The details by which this value is determined and calculated are left unexplained, but it is known that this number is not static and can vary during combat depending on the intensity of the fight, the exhaustion of the participants, and many other factors. Many soldiers and mercenaries make use of a device known as a Wrist Gauge to determine the SEV of their opponents before engaging them in combat, and it is currently a major problem in the Romerian Government of having its soldiers become overly reliant on these numbers (often assuming that they are guaranteed to win in a direct confrontation if their own SEV is higher than that of their opponent's). A Wrist Guage takes the form of a light, mechanized device that hooks on to one's forearm and portrays the SEV value of all nearby individuals (this can be set to only display values above a certain number or to only read a specific individual) on a screen. While the majority of those who rely on these numbers employ the use of a Wrist Gauge, there are also those who are capable of determining SEV on their own. These people are known as Aura Readers and their capacity to determine this quantity on their own stems from their Soul Weapons power to analyze the aura's of others. An example of an Aura Reader would be Rika Alldrive, whose soul weapon, Elysium, grants her the power to physically see the auras of those around her and ultimately gauge their strength, affinity, weapon class, and SEV.
While SEV can generally be considered a relatively accurate measure of one's physical ability, there are faults in its use. One of these would be that, should the subject have the capacity to control their energy output (like Faust Bloodstone), the device can be deceived if the target either raises our lowers their aura's size and density (both of which are taken into account by the SEV calculation). Another problem with the reading is that the relationship between aura output and fighting capacity is not universally true. There are rare individuals, most notably Arcosians, with an abnormally high aura volume, but do not necessarily possess the fighting capabilities to match it. A prime example of this would be Ryu Naraka whose SEV during the Atem Saga indicated that he was several times stronger than that of the average adult (this was due to his status as a Neo-Arcosian, who generally possess an extremely large and dense aura), but in reality he was in fact much weaker than the average person his age as a result of his medical condition. Thereby, it should be noted that the SEV values of those with this characteristic (including all Neo-Arcosians) are unrepresentative of their physical ability. A third problem related to the reading is the common misconception that the values are relative to each other. The ratio of SEV to combat ability on a graph is not one-to-one and possesses an upward, decreasing slope. This slope is the result of the ratio following a law of decreasing marginal benefit to combat ability in relation to aura volume; meaning the more one's aura increases the less of an increase to their general ability that increase represents. In other words, as you grow stronger, your aura will have to increase by greater amounts to reflect the same amount of improvement in combat ability. From this it can be seen that someone who has a SEV of 100 is not twice as strong as someone who has an SEV of 50.
